Downtown Fort Myers
The River District is downtown Fort Myers' exciting and enriching
enhancements to the coast of the Caloosahatchee River. Based upon
plans by Andres Duany crafted in 2001, Fort Myers has been
revitalizing the downtown area concentrating on:Adding more residential units. The city approved over 3,600 waterfront units, mostly in high-rise condominium/resorts along the banks.
Creating pedestrian-friendly streetscapes. Utility replacement, streetlights, sidewalks, landscaping under shady canopies make First Street an enjoyable stroll to shopping, dining, and work.
Maximizing existing commercial areas. Replacing an old, languishing strip center with a mixed use development which will provide groceries and other staples for residents is the goal of First Street Village.
Riverfront development. The city has a great deal of control over prime riverfront land, and has been concentrating on approving plans which reinforce the pedestrian-friendly, mixed use plans for the River District.
